Lullaby  (performance)

Lullaby (performance)

“Lullaby” is about women’s choice to build a career and their refusal to have children. In this performance, I sing a lullaby to my work instead of to my child.

I rocked the milk until it turned into butter. Then I spread the butter on freshly baked bread and offered it to those present, because it is important for me to share what I create.

Independence and self-expression are priorities in my life, so I consciously choose not to have children or build a traditional family, and instead invest my time in creativity.

Notes on making butter:

  • This method of making butter was widely used 30 years ago and earlier in different countries around the world.
  • During the performance, Ukrainian lullabies are sung.
  • A 3-liter jar is used for churning the milk, as milk was always kept in such jars at home.
  • Before starting, the milk is warmed with my body — my mother told me that in her childhood, milk was warmed on the stove before churning.

The expression “I butter away” is my personal joke that reflects my way of life, in which I work a lot. That is why butter here is not incidental.
